This month our experts want to talk to you about...

Family health history! During August and September, GenesInLife.org will feature blog posts, articles, videos and other information on family health history in addition to what you can already find on the site. Our experts are some of the best in the field. They are excited to answer any questions about family health history (or other health and genetics topics) you might have. Keep checking our blog over the next two months for new and exciting information on family health history and genetics in your daily life. Also stay tuned to learn more about whole genome sequencing  in October and November.

Robin Bennett

Senior Licensed Genetic CounselorGenetic Medicine Clinic

Robin has been a pioneer in providing genetic counseling services to families for 30 years. She has developed practice guidelines and standards for genetic counseling and testing for many inherited conditions, and she has many publications on the importance of family medical history. Her leadership roles have included President of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and Chair of the Family History Work Group of NCHPEG. She has been on the board of the American Board of Genetics Counselors and President of the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling. 

 


Penelope J. Moore

Associate Professor and ChairIona College Department of Social Work

Penelope has participated in projects emphasizing family health history (FHH).  In collaboration with Stanford University School of Medicine Geriatric Education Center, Iona College and Genetic Alliance, Penelope and colleagues have most recently completed a study exploring the role of older adults as facilitators of conversations about FHH.  Professional memberships include: National Association of Social Workers, Council on Social Work Education, and Association of Baccalaureate Program Directors. 
 

 


James O'Leary

Chief Innovation OfficerGenetic Alliance

James is a member of the Genes in Life team and the Chief Innovation Officer at Genetic Alliance. Over the past eight years, he has spearheaded projects that help individuals talk to their families about health, engaging community organizations, health centers, hospitals, employee wellness programs, and more. In addition, he led the development of familyhealthhistory.org, a website that lets you design and customize your very own guide to family health history with stories, pictures, and information that is relevant to your family or community.
 



Dana Zakalik

Director, Beaumont Cancer Genetics Program
Professor, Oakland University William Beaumont Medical School

Dr. Zakalik is the Director of the Beaumont Cancer Genetics Program at the Beaumont Health System and a Professor of Medicine at the Oakland University William Beaumont Medical School. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Oncology, and has a specialty in Breast Oncology and Cancer Genetics and Prevention. She sits on the board of directors of the Michigan Cancer Consortium, where she has been chair of the Genetics and Genomics subcommittee. Dr. Zakalik's research interests focus on identifying genetic determinants of cancer risk, and identifying optimal ways to manage patients with hereditary predisposition for cancer.  Her Cancer Genetics Program is one of the busiest programs of its kind in the country, and has identified and managed a growing number of families at high risk for breast and ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and a variety other cancer risk syndromes.
